Why Your Singapore Business Website Loads Slowly (and the 3-Hour Fix)

Every second your website takes to load costs you. Research consistently shows a 7% conversion drop for every additional second of load time. For a Singapore SME website doing SGD 50,000/month in enquiries and bookings, a 2-second improvement in load time is worth approximately SGD 7,000/month in recovered leads. That's not a developer expense — it's an investment.

The bigger issue: Google now uses Core Web Vitals as an explicit ranking factor. Slow sites rank lower, regardless of how good their content and backlinks are.

The 3 Core Web Vitals, Explained Simply

MetricWhat it measuresGood scoreFailing score
LCP Largest Contentful PaintHow long before the main content (biggest image or text block) is visibleUnder 2.5sOver 4.0s
CLS Cumulative Layout ShiftHow much page elements jump around while loading (that button that moves as you're about to click)Under 0.1Over 0.25
INP Interaction to Next PaintHow quickly the page responds after you tap or click somethingUnder 200msOver 500ms

How to Check Your Scores

Two free tools are all you need:

Test on mobile first. Google uses mobile-first indexing, meaning it evaluates your mobile site for ranking purposes. A desktop score of 85 with a mobile score of 34 means your SEO ranking is based on 34. Most Singapore SME websites score 20–45 on mobile.

The 5 Most Common Reasons Singapore Websites Are Slow

1

Unoptimised images — the biggest culprit

Most Singapore SME websites load 3–5MB images that came straight from a smartphone camera. A hero image should be under 200KB in WebP format. At 3MB, that single image adds 2–4 seconds to your LCP score on a mobile connection. We see this on approximately 80% of sites we audit.

2

Shared hosting overloaded

Many Singapore SMEs are on shared hosting plans at SGD 3–8/month where the server is shared with hundreds of other websites. During peak hours, available server resources drop significantly. Your website competes with 200 others for CPU time, causing delays of 0.5–2s before any content even starts loading (Time to First Byte, or TTFB).

3

Too many WordPress plugins

The average Singapore SME WordPress site has 18–25 plugins installed. Each plugin adds CSS and JavaScript that loads on every page visit, regardless of whether that page uses it. Common offenders: contact form plugins loading scripts on every page, page builders like Divi generating 400KB+ of CSS, and outdated sliders from 2019.

4

No CDN

If your hosting server is in the US, UK, or even Malaysia, visitors in Singapore are making a round-trip data request to that location for every file on your page. A CDN (Cloudflare's free tier works excellently) stores your files on servers in Singapore, cutting round-trip time dramatically.

5

Render-blocking scripts

JavaScript loaded in the page's <head> forces the browser to pause rendering while it downloads and parses the script. Analytics scripts, Facebook Pixel, and marketing tracking tags are common offenders. Moving them to load asynchronously or deferring them improves LCP and INP scores immediately.

The 3-Hour Fix — What You Can Do Today

Step 1 30 minutes

Compress all images — convert to WebP

Download all images from your website. Run them through TinyPNG (tinypng.com — free, handles JPG and PNG) or Squoosh (squoosh.app — Google's free tool, converts to WebP). Target under 200KB per image, under 100KB for small card images. Re-upload the compressed versions.

Expected improvement: LCP typically drops 1–2 seconds. This single step fixes more Core Web Vitals failures than anything else.

Step 2 45 minutes

Enable caching (WordPress) or browser caching headers

For WordPress sites: install WP Super Cache (free) or LiteSpeed Cache (free, faster). Enable page caching immediately. For non-WordPress sites, add Cache-Control headers to your server configuration for static assets (images, CSS, JS) — 1-year cache for assets that don't change.

Expected improvement: Repeat visitors and crawlers load pages 60–80% faster. TTFB drops significantly for cached pages.

Step 3 45 minutes

Defer non-critical JavaScript, move scripts to bottom

In your website's HTML or your WordPress theme's functions.php, find tracking scripts (Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, WhatsApp widget) loaded in <head> and add async or defer attribute. In WordPress, use the free Asset CleanUp Pro plugin to manage where scripts load.

Expected improvement: LCP and INP improve. Pages visually render faster even if total load time stays similar.

Step 4 60 minutes

Set up Cloudflare free CDN

Sign up at cloudflare.com (free). Add your domain, update your domain's nameservers to Cloudflare's (your domain registrar will have a nameservers setting). Cloudflare automatically caches your site on its global network, including Singapore PoP, and adds DDoS protection, SSL, and performance optimisations at no cost.

Expected improvement: 30–60% faster load time for Singapore visitors if your origin server is offshore. 10–20% improvement if server is already in Singapore.
